The dictionary defines hero as: “A person who exhibits extraordinary bravery, firmness, or greatness of soul, in connection with any pursuit, work or enterprise; a person admired and venerated for achievements and noble qualities.”
My heroes are caregivers whose soulful work with the elderly, infirm and disabled brings grace and dignity to the lives of people about and for whom they care. It is easy to turn away from the mentally challenged, race past the infirm, or avert our glance from the hopeless. The caregivers are too often invisible.
These portraits honor my heroes, show their beauty and dignity, and remind me to stare and be less afraid of the day when I might need a hero of my own.
